About Open Spaces

Equine Facilitated Wellness

Open Spaces is an equine facilitated wellness (EFW) program located in beautiful Guelph, Ontario. We partner with horses to offer an experiential, client-centered and strength-based approach to counselling and therapy for children and youth. This meaningful therapeutic experience is based on connection, trust and relationship. Our hope is to create safe, nurturing spaces where clients can foster insight, give meaning to their experiences and develop coping strategies and skills to contribute to their mental health and wellness.

How Horses Help

It can be hard to share your story and explore your challenges with others. The connection that is developed between client, therapist and horse is the foundation for a safe therapeutic environment where clients can express themselves openly.

Horses are herd and prey animals and are highly attuned to the subtleties in their environment. They are profoundly sensitive, intuitive creatures who respond and react to their surroundings including the emotional states and non-verbal cues of people. The immediate feedback we receive from horses provides meaningful opportunities for insight, reflection and healing. Horses live in the present; they don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. Through their example, we can begin to live more mindfully in the present moment.
